Concrete Pile Caps

A pile cap is a thick concrete block that sits on top of a group of piles. It takes the load from a column or wall above and spreads it out to all the piles below. Think of it like a traffic circle that directs cars to different roads - the pile cap directs building weight to multiple piles.

The number of piles depends on the load. Light residential might use 2-pile caps. Medium loads use 3-pile or 4-pile caps. Heavy loads or corners may need 5 or more piles. An engineer calculates the exact number based on column loads and individual pile capacity.

Pile cap thickness depends on the pile spacing and loads. Typical residential pile caps are 24-36 inches thick. The thickness must be enough for the concrete to transfer loads through shear without reinforcement failure. Larger pile groups need thicker caps.

Piles should be spaced at least 3 times the pile diameter apart (3D spacing). For a 12-inch pile, minimum spacing is 36 inches center-to-center. This prevents piles from interfering with each other and allows the cap to properly distribute loads.
